We Look at Building Differently
studioB-E strives to produce buildings and environments that are conceived as places rather than objects and part of a larger social and cultural context rather than market commodities or diverting works of art.
Thomas & Freda Battcock-Emerson started studioB-E in order to focus their experience, the many productive relationships they have created and their passion for architecture on the task of making the building process as timely, cost efficient and as enjoyable as possible so that the
resultant built work exceeds the client’s expectations without exceeding their budget. They also started the business because, after twenty-five years of marriage and raising five children, they really enjoy spending time together.
Tom studied Architecture and City & Regional Planning at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Prior to starting studioB-E, Tom had over twenty-five years of experience working for architectural firms in Maryland, Washington D.C., North Carolina and New Hampshire. Tom's passions outside of design include soccer, a sport he has played, coached and currently referees when he's not watching his children play the game.
After receiving her degree in English at The Catholic University of America, Freda began a creative design career at Vogue Magazine and has worked in the fitness, hospitality and restaurant industries. When not managing the business aspects of studioB-E, Freda is considered one of the most dynamic fitness instructors & personal trainers on the Seacoast.
studioB-E concentrates on the design of single family residential projects, commercial office space and community planning. A member of the Congress of Residential Architecture, Tom is committed to improving people’s lives by improving the homes in which they live. Tom & Freda have utilized their strong sense of community and his historical expertise to help clients secure regulatory approvals in Maine's sensitive shoreland areas and within historical contexts such as The Historic District in Portsmouth, NH. His wealth of experience in workplace design allows him to assist business owners in maximizing the return on their investment in office space. Tom's experience as vice-chairman of the Mitchell & Shapleigh Schools Building Committee and as a member of the building committee at St. Raphael’s Church found him acting in the role of the client, giving him a unique insight into the building process from both sides of the ledger.
They have undertaken active participation in many local & regional voluntary planning & development activities such as the Kittery Economic Development Committee, the Seacoast Workforce Housing Coalition, the Kittery Inclusive Housing Committee, the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge Replacement Stakeholders Committee and the Kittery Comprehensive Plan Update Committee. Previous service includes membership on the Kittery Planning Board and Board of Appeals, the Kittery School Department Building Committee & Parent Advisory Committee, the Safford School Committee and the DuPont Circle Neighborhood Committee. Tom is currently involved in writing a model Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance for the State of Maine in conjunction with the Maine Center for Aging.
Both Tom & Freda strongly believe that education, of both the consumer of design as well as the design professional, is the key to producing built environments of a quality that resonates for generations. They have represented the profession at school career days, given lectures to science & art classes, been a part of Barnes & Noble's Homeschooling lecture series, presented at the University of Maine Geriatrics Colloquium, Portsmouth’s Pecha Kucha Night and are currently developing an adult education class to assist the general public in understanding architecture's role in the ongoing cultural life of communities. Tom has also acted as a design studio critic, guest juror and thesis advisor for the architecture programs at The Catholic University of America, the University of Maryland and the Boston Architectural College. Freda has served on the Kittery School Department Staff Selection Committee, as a voluntary school librarian and has given lectures on parenting a child with Autism.
studioB-E offers enthusiasm, expertise and individual attention to the task of creating beautiful, livable, cost effective physical environments.
